Description: Early 19th century chemist who was considered to be one of Britain's leading scientists. Among other things, he discovered the anesthetic effect of laughing gas (nitrous oxide) and identified metals such as potassium, sodium, barium, strontium, calcium and magnesium. 1778-1829
